Patty cake, patty cake

Check another big one off the list. JJ and I met Sabrina at Mad Hatter's Cafe and Bakery today to taste and design our wedding cake. We met the guy who will be in charge of the cake, who I think is also the owner/manager of the bakery. He came out wearing a polo, shorts, and sandals and I thought "I can work with a guy like this." So after tasting cakes and fillings we've designed our cake! Each tier of cake has 3 cake layers and 2 filling layers, plus the outside icing. The whole cake will be iced with white buttercream icing, but we decided the insides needed to be different. So here's what we came up with. Bottom tier: 3 white cake layers, 2 layers of custard filling Next tier: white cake, strawberry filling, white cake, whipped cream filling, white cake Next tier: 3 chocolate cake layers, 2 layers of chocolate mousse Top tier: chocolate cake, raspberry filling, chocolate cake, white chocolate mouse filling, chocolate cake I had more sugar at that tasting than I usually have in a week. But we picked our cake and it'll be pretty and tasty and now if we can get the invitations sent and flowers picked, I think we'll have all the big stuff picked out!

So it'll look a little like this ... and a little not like this ... but you get the idea, it's a wedding cake  Posted by Hello

He said, she said

This weekend JJ and I went to Perry for an engagement/wedding shower. But while we were there we spent some time with his niece and nephew and his friends from his childhood and here are some of the quotes from the weekend. They are in fact totally random but hey, they were fun. 5-year-old Genna (after putting on a very formal, heavy material dress): I don't think I'm old enough to wear this ... Genna (after deciding she liked the dress with no sleeves): I like this one ... but don't show my daddy that picture. He won't like it. Genna (after looking the mirror at her dress for awhile): I think I need heels. Unidentified female to a child: No, it's not goodest. It goes good, gooder, best. Me and Paula: *hysterics* JJ had Walker from about 9:30am to about 10:15am when the girls when shopping for Genna's dress and Jackie and Sean were at Wal-Mart. After 30 minutes of throwing the baseball around and the football around ... Walker: I hafta potty JJ (thinking): Uh oh ... they go in the restroom ... Walker: I just have to pee pee JJ (thinking): YES! I can handle this ... Walker, at 4pm after waking up from a nap me: Do you need to potty? Walker: No ... Unca JJ took me and yes, he was referring to at 10 am At lunch yesterday telling stories Michael: I never learned to lie. Don't go shopping and then ask me what you look like in something because I'll tell ya ... about the steaks that Hollie's dad apparently makes: Michael: The next time I get one of those I'm telling him, "That's not a steak. It's a burnt offering." JJ: ... and so the sports staff had a meeting at Hooters ... I don't know why we'd have a meeting at Hooters ... Susan: Bill, you want to explain that to him? later during the same story ... JJ: ... it's the most awkward thing in the world to try and catch up with a girl you once knew when she's your waitress at Hooters ... someone (I can't remember who): Well what do you say to her? Wow, you've grown? Pictures to come of our wonderful presents. My thanks and love to the people of Perry, GA. Especially Frank, Gayle and Brandon Borah and all the Potts. Even to a Kansas girl, there's no place like [your] home.

Age to age

Last night JJ called Florence, his grandmother. It was her birthday. She turned 89. EIGHTY NINE! THAT is an accomplishment. I got to talk to her for a little while, to wish her happy birthday and so on, and as I talked to her I came to the realization she has seen and heard so much. Think about it - she's 89. That means she was born on April 19, 1916 if I did my math right. So that means she's seen the end of WWI, the Great Depression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, D-Day on June 6, 1944, Eisenhower, JFK, Nixon, both the appointing and death of Pope John Paul, II, the day JFK got shot and died, the civil rights movements of the 1960s, including Martin Luther King, Jr., the integration of the school systems, the Columbia space shuttle disaster, the first man on the moon, the OKC federal building bombing, the Columbine high school shooting, Christopher Reeve at the peak of his movie career, his accident, his death, the entire life of the late Princess Diana, September 11, and I'm sure countless other world and nationwide events that I just can't remember. How full a life it has been for her. And yet the list continues because those are just the national and international things she's experienced. What about the local things? I don't know a whole lot about Florence but I know she was engaged to Tom Cooper's brother who died in a car accident, then, years later when Tom Cooper's first wife died of cancer, Florence married Tom and became Florence Cooper. She became Jackie's stepmother. She then got to watch Jackie go through high school, college, and law school. Then, Jackie met Terry, married her and 2 years later Jackie, Jr, or JJ, was born and Florence became a grandmother. 2 1/2 years after that, Sean was born. She watched them grow up. She watched them both graduate from high school and college, she watched as Sean married Paula and then became a great-grandmother when Sean and Paula had Genna and Walker. She watched Sean go through seminary and become a pastor. She watched JJ start his journalism career, and now she's still around as JJ is getting married. And this is just the stuff that I know about! There's so much stuff I don't know about, so much history, so much life there. As Florence said last night, "After living in 1 town for 89 years, I know everyone and I've seen it all." How true, how true. Florence has lived from age to age so hats off to Florence Cooper. It's certainly not an just a number, it's an accomplishment.

This car corners like it's on rails

Well ... yesterday I woke up, went down to my car and discovered my tire was flat. That's right. Flat. To see how flat it was, click here. See? Flat. Before I moved out to North Carolina I had learned to change my own tire. So, no biggie, I just pull out the jack and lug wrench, fix that sucker and I'm on my way. Except ... I'm not strong enough to take the lug nuts off myself. Even the first time we tried to do it, when I was in decent shape, I needed Bryant's help so I needed to call in a favor, the calvary, my hero, otherwise known as my husband-to-be, Mr. JJ. He came over on his lunch hour, fixed my tire, washed his hands and nonchalantly returned to work. What a knight in shining armor. What a guy. Of course, I then had to take my car in and my parents (very very nicely) paid 400 dollars for new tires. But while I was waiting for my tires to be fixed I had a very good lunch at Bread Co., followed by an expedition to find a salon for makeup and hair for my wedding (done and done - thank you very nice Aveda salon people) and then made a trip to Belk's to make sure that our china is in for people who want to buy it in Macon, where the lovely and gracious Gayle Borah and her lovely family are throwing JJ and me a shower next weekend. THEN I rewarded myself for my productivity by going to the Marble Slab Creamery and getting a scoop of sweet cream ice cream with fresh strawberries mixed in all encased in a lovely dark chocolate (semi-sweet/bitter - yum!) cone. As I was coming out of the Marble Slab 3 older ladies (70s maybe) were eyeing me - or more accurately, they were eyeing my ice cream! One of them finally said, "Oh we were just admiring your dessert there!" I had an inspiration and the following conversation ensued ... me: Oh, yes. It's quite good. nice lady: Are those STRAWBERRIES? me: Yes they are. They will mix fresh fruit in with your ice cream here. nice lady: That just looks so delicious! me: I'll make you an offer - would you mind if I bought you and your friends here each an ice cream cone? nice lady: *looks at Angela as though Angela is crazy* me: I'm serious - I will buy you each a fresh strawberry ice cream cone if you'd like! nice lady: That's very sweet of you but ... we'll just watch you enjoy yours The point of the story is - when there are 3 older ladies watching you eat ice cream it seems like you're 10 times more likely to drip all over your hands, worry that your ice cream is going to fall off the cone, and wonder whether there's melted ice cream all over your mouth. Last night we went to Curtis and Rachel's for Curtis' Shai Awards party. I made yummy bruschetta and there was lots of other yummy stuff there, too. (I've picked up the use of the word yummy - thanks a lot JJ and Sabrina :-p) There were wings from WingStop and someone made a really good pasta salad, and creamy dip for chips, cookies and just lots and lots of food. Jamie and Rob (who flew in from London yesterday) came and hung out with everyone. Around 10:30, though, it was past my bedtime. Lots of fun.

The fun never stops

For pictures of the dance lesson visit Sabrina's blog

I could've danced all night ...

Last night the lovely Sabrina and the wonderful Steve came over to JJ's. I made us all steak and salad and potatoes (which everyone thought were yummy - I thought I had overseasoned the steak. And mine was overcooked.) And then AFTER dinner came the fun part. Steve and Sabrina can dance ... so they taught me and JJ to dance! JJ forbid me from posting any pictures on my blog but I have to say that he gave a valiant effort and by the end of the night was showing marked improvement! I'm not much of a dancer myself - I think it's fun but I'm not very good at it - but for our wedding we want to dance. So I guess we're gonna dance!

Teacher appreciation day

Yesterday was TA appreciation day and in honor in all of us who pseudo teach classes there was a barbeque in our honor. From 11-2 we were served free Carolina barbeque and got free UNC TA t-shirts. So around noon, Leslie, Jeff, Ilana and I plus Charlene from the clinical program went to the TA appreciation site where we were met with a huge red banner reading "TA Appreciation BBQ" and upon closer inspection signs that read "Sorry - we are out of food". There was no food, no t-shirts, the people sponsoring the thing had packed up and left. Infuriated over no free food, Jeff pulled out his camera phone and took pictures. Those will be posted ... and sent to the proper authorities. So much for TA UNappreciation day!

An Interview from Ms. Skrebes

It's been awhile since I've done a meme ... and Jessica had this one up on her blog so I just jumped on that bandwagon. Here are her questions, and my answers: 1) What was it that initially drew you to Christianity? Well it depends on which stage of life you're talking about. When I was in high school Christianity was a pretty vague concept. It was this "thing" that my friends did. So in the beginning it was so I could do stuff with my friends. If you remember, Miss Jessica, there was a time when there was a youth group at Grace Presbyterian in Wichita that Sarah Cox went to so I went with her. I believe that you graced us with your presence, though not regularly, at least once or twice. Robyn came with pretty good regularity, if I remember correctly. When I went to college it was really something more about the people I knew who are Christian. They seemed to be able to bridge this gap in life that other people couldn't. Curiosity won out. That bridge they seemed to have, or be able to build, was peace in Jesus. I have it. It's wonderful. And the rest, as they say, is history. 2) How do you expect your life to change post-wedding to Mr. Wonderful? That's an interesting choice of adjective. I guess I don't think of him as Mr. Wonderful, per se, although he is quite wonderful. When I think of Mr. Wonderful I tend to think of a cartoon character with rippling muscles a la Mr. Brawny-the-paper-towel-man. I prefer to think of my JJ as a human, thank you very much. :-) But that aside, I guess the biggest change I'm going to have to learn to adjust to is this responsibility to another human being for the rest of my life. It's not that this is a bad thing, but it will be a transition for me to go from fighting for independence a good part of my life, and still doing so, to understanding that every decision I ever make is going to affect both of our lives. It's a task that will probably strain me a little but I have great expectations that it will go okay. Beyond that, it will be a lovely thing to have someone come home to me at night, or me to come home to him, to have my best friend and confidant around forever, and to build a life together. Oh and lest I forget: the sex. Let's not forget the sex. 3) What do you want on your tombstone? Or more specifically (minus the cheezy pizza commercial reference), eighty years from now when you're reflecting on your long, full, happy life, what do you hope your legacy will be? I hope that people remember me for 2 things: That I had a heart for people and that I had a heart for Jesus. Beyond that, so little else matters that I'm not sure it's worth even mentioning. So here's my tombstone: Here lies Angela Cooper. She had a heart for people. And a heart for Jesus. And to her, that was all that ever mattered. 4) Who is your favorite musician, and why does this individual/group receive this coveted title? Well unfortunately since the downfall of free/legal music downloading, my music collection has sort of gone to pot. With the onset of iTunes it has picked up some but not a lot as iTunes still cost money. However, at the moment, my favorite band is By the Tree, a Christian band that does some really good stuff. They have the "coveted" title because I like their lyrics, I like the fact they write their own songs, and I like their music. 5) Ten years. Your life. What does it look like? I'll be 33 ... and hopefully I will have a couple of kids, probably both under the age of 5 at the time. I have no idea where I will be living and I have no idea how much money we'll be making. I'll hopefully be teaching at a small college and JJ will hopefully be something between a free lance writer and a stay at home dad. I guess it's pretty idyllic. On the other hand, my life right now is pretty idyllic. Call me charmed. So for the rest of you bloggers out there, here's how this works. Leave me a comment saying you'd like to be interviewed. I come up with 5 questions for you, and you post the answer in your blog. Doesn't that sound like fun?
