Welcome to the family

Christmas has come and gone. JJ and I went to Perry for Christmas and on the way we got stuck in a traffic jam just north of Charlotte. It took 2 HOURS to go roughly ... 10 miles. After that the rest of the trip was a breeze. Christmas Eve we slept in late, had lunch, hung out at the house, and went to Perry United Methodist for a communion service where I was introduced to more Perry-ians only this time as JJ's fiance. I sort of enjoyed that. Christmas Eve during the day JJ and I exchanged 1 gift each ... I'm hoping that's something we can keep doing where no matter what we do with other people, family, friends on Christmas day that on Christmas Eve we can just do gifts with each other. That would be cool. Christmas morning we were laying on the couch and just sort of lounging when the phone rang. We figured it was Sean telling us they were on the way but they were 10 minutes from arriving. No one was showered and/or dressed. 3 of us - JJ, Terry and I - had 10 minutes. They have 3 bathrooms. All three were in use. And about 10 minutes later Sean, Paula, Genna, Walker and their new puppy Georgia showed up. We opened presents. HUGE PILES of presents. Walker actually got enough presents that he got tired of opening them and just wanted to play with the ones he had already opened. Christmas night we went to the Borahs for The Supper. Every year Frank and Gayle Borah have the clan over for dinner and it's this big, traditional supper and it's quite fun. And this time I actually knew people so it was a lot more fun for me. Plus, Walker and me are pals now ... so if I got tired of the grown-ups I could hang out with the coolest little 2-year-0ld around. Sunday we met up with Sean and Paula at a bar in Macon to watch the Steelers. Steelers 20, Ravens 7. Carraba's Sunday night. We left Monday morning. It wasn't as though I was nervous ... I wasn't ... but I was travel weary heading down there and it didn't make me more travel weary. So that was nice. I guess I'm on my way to being a Cooper. On July 9, 2005 I will become one when I marry my soulmate. It's good to be home.

Over the river and through the woods

There's going to be some blogger silence for a few days. I go home to Chapel Hill today (I get see JJ TONIGHT ... YAAAAAAAY!) and then tomorrow we're off to Perry, GA for Christmas with the Coopers. I'm sure I'll have stories and pictures when I return. Have a Merry Christmas! 8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Upset

Dolphins 29, Patriots 28 ... ???? That's right. I didn't watch this game last night. Did anyone? I logged onto nfl.com's gamestats to check the status of my fantasy team and that was it. My team was winning, Patriots had the ball with 2:07 left on the clock and a 5 point lead. I figured, why bother, right? Well the good news is that with this loss the Steelers now almost assuredly have the homefield advantage for the playoffs clinched. Steelers still have the Ravens this Sunday and the Bills the Sunday after that. The Ravens' defense has been solid and this week against the Indianapolis Colts they played a pretty solid game. Since they're the only team the Steelers have lost to this regular season I'm hoping that CBS will make a big deal out of it and broadcast it everywhere ... or at least in Perry, GA. I can't believe it ... I'm headed off to look at ... wedding invitations. And so ... it starts.

The Blue and White

I was suddenly aware of how long it has been since I've really spent time in Wichita when I went with Danny and Bryant visit East today. They've added a lot of new stuff to the place thanks to a bond issue that passed the year after I graduated. There's a new "Science Building" where all the teachers now have lab space ... REALLY NICE lab space. The old pool, the place where I realized swimming is one of my passions, is gone now. They tore down the part of the building where it used to be and built a hallway that leads to the new Science Building. My former teachers have all moved around ... and they've reproduced! Joe Hutchinson, former physics teacher and coach my senior year, and his wife Jaime, had a boy about 3 years ago. They had another boy, Noah. Reimer, former calculus teacher, and his wife, Cathy, had a little girl, Rebecca Elizabeth who's 10 months now. Biggest blue eyes ever. They have another little boy they adopted from India last year, Braden, who's now just over 2. Beautiful family, those Reimers. In the end I wandered around the building but I think I've had enough. The old East High just doesn't look the same anymore. There was pride in being runners-up at State swimming having trained in a 20-yard pool. There was pride in that old building. The improvements are great and I have no doubt that next generation of East High-ers and IB-ers will benefit from them but I'm glad I came from the pre-bond-issue generation of East. There's pride in that building. We hail the glory of East High Her honor shining bright In Wichita we proudly raise Her banner blue and white We stand before the whole wide world Blue Aces soaring in the sky And ever will our voices raise In praise of OLD EAST HIGH!!

Steelers 33, Giants 30 and other football notes

Yesterday for the second time in two weeks I watched a Steelers game sans JJ. There's a certain amount of pride that swells within me everytime I do that. Not only do I actually care (probably too much really) how the Steelers are doing, I watch the games religiously. I haven't missed one since the Ravens game (well, okay so I watched the Dolphins and Bengals games via nfl.com's gamestats and watched the Browns game @ a bar with Dave) and although my learning curve doesn't match Big Ben's I did manage, last week, to make a comment about 2 deep defense. *Angela beams with pride* Yes, it's the little things that make me happy. At any rate, yesterday at 12:30 local time, I sat down in front of my TV to watch the Steelers here in Wichita. My parents, after attempting to speak when they were actually on the field, gave up after about 10 minutes and left the house. Willie Ponder returned the Steelers' first kickoff 91 yards for a TD. Shortly thereafter, Big Ben got picked off. A pass intended for Lee Mays got picked by the Giants. I stared. And then reminded myself that we were about 3 minutes into the game. The Steelers responded with Antwaan Randle El throwing a touchdown pass to Verron Haynes. Randle El now has a receiving touchdown, a rushing touchdown AND a passing touchdown. I don't know the stats on that but there can't be that many receivers out there who have those numbers, right? The first quarter ended with the Giants having a 4 point lead over the Steelers. So far the Steelers had managed a touchdown and a field goal. At the half it was Steelers 20, Giants 14. One score game. The lead would change sides 3 more times before the end of the game and one of the coolest things to watch during the process of this game was the two quarterbacks. Eli Manning, who had a passer rating of ZERO after his game last week, stepped up and made some plays. Ben Roethlisberger stepped up when it counted and made some plays. The wave of young quarterbacks appears to be upon us. Next week the Steelers play the Ravens. I might just jump on the hype bandwagon and say sure, it's the only team they've lost to so far this season. Am I going to watch the game. OH YEAH. Go Steelers. On a side note, I am addicted to the 2-minute drill game feature on Madden NFL 2005. I have the attention span of a gnat and as a result I so rarely ever play a full game on NCAA or now on NFL (I tried 3 times last night). But the 2 minute drill is GREAT. 2 minutes, ball at the 20, 3 time outs, go. My best so far is 2 touchdowns. Plus, I can substitute in my players. So I've got Roethlisberger in at QB and I'm playing with a healthy Duce Staley and a healthy Plaxico Burress. Not to mention, when I'm playing actual games I've also got a healthy Kendrell Bell and Casey Hampton. Video games are fun. I'm tired. Very tired. I think I'm going to go play some more 2-minute drill.

My brother the genius

Tonight, after my brother got home and my family had eaten dinner, Bryant and I headed off to Best Buy. We needed to buy a power strip for some stuff we were plugging in (okay, that was a dumb way of expressing that), a wireless card for his computer so he could have wi-fi in the house, and we were also in search of Christmas presents from me to him and vice versa. Well, we got what we were looking for. I got Bryant the latest Half-life game, he got me a thumbdrive. While we were in line (a REALLY LONG line that was moving amazingly fast) I wandered off to look at major appliances. I don't know when I reached the stage in life when I needed/wanted to look at major appliances but there I went. I saw a refrigerator by LG that had a built-in LCD TV on its front. The TV has remote and is cable ready. OK so ... forgive me for being somewhat aghast but ... seriously ... how unnecessary is a TV on your refrigerator door??? I made some comment about this to my brother saying how I shouldn't even be looking at refrigerators considering that of the major appliances this was one of the ones I would not be needing in the immediate future. Bryant then pointed out ... why buy a refrigerator at all? His theory? Go and hang out near college campuses at the end of the semester/year. At that point, everyone is throwing stuff out and if JJ and I can scrounge oh, 5 or 6 of the little refrigerators and then stack them ... we wouldn't need to buy a refrigerator at all. He had a point. One that I will not using. But it would actually work. I'm exhausted. Will post about the Steelers' win tomorrow.

The In-Laws-to-be

I suddenly came to the realization earlier this week that a result of being engaged is that in the not-so-distant-future it means I will also be in-lawed. What does that mean? Am I ready to be "in-lawed"? In this case it means I gain a mother- and father-in-law, a brother- and sister-in-law, and the cutest little niece and nephew. JJ will also be in-lawed. He'll gain a brother-in-law, a mother-in-law and a father-in-law. Most of my faithful readers know my parents. But very few, other than Jackie (the FIL to be) and Sean (the BIL to be), have met the Coopers so let's get the scoop shall we? Jackie, JJ's dad, is ... well you know those pictures you see in movies and cartoons and in good old southern books of the grandfather that holds the little grandchild on his knee and tells the kid the most wonderful stories he's ever heard? You know the stories of the wholesome, well-bred, chivalrous, faithful loyal guy? Yeah Jackie would be that guy embodied. I can just see him, at some point, sitting in a rocker on a porch somewhere in the south holding his grandkids in his lap and telling them stories. It's a pretty picture, isn't it? Terry, JJ's mom, is ... well she's just sweetness itself. She and my mom are a lot alike in that they will do anything themselves to make someone else's life easier or better. And Terry is the very picture of the modern day woman who has somehow managed to juggle it all. Her 2 grown sons love her, her grandchildren fawn over her, her husband adores her, she's the principal of a private Christian school in Perry (and a good one from what I've heard), she's active in the church, she has good friends. Every woman should be so lucky and blessed as Terry Cooper. Sean and Paula, JJ's younger brother and sister-in-law ... I've only met once. We went to their house when I visited in August. They are hilarious. It is funny but even though I don't know Paula that well I have the feeling that she and I are cut of the same cloth. From what JJ's told me, we needle and poke fun and have dry senses of humor. And she loves country music - glory be, truly a sister! Paula is a good mom to Genna and Walker (who will get their own, probably very long, paragraph here in a minute) and from what I've heard she's got a gift for teaching children. It's all pretty cool. Sean is one of those people that exudes the presence of God. I can count the number of people I know like that on one hand and he's definitely one of them. He's one of those guys where you look at him and go, "He was called to the ministry ... no doubt ..." and from that he is a good dad and he and his brother are pretty close, even though I think if they had to throw down JJ would be in some serious trouble. And what description of the Cooper clan would be complete without descriptions of Genna and Walker? Genna's 4, she'll be 5 next month, and she's a truly remarkable little girl. Very very smart, very articulate, and very "big sisterly" to Walker. We will officially ask her to be the flower girl in our wedding when we visit next week but ... I think Genna's already been practicing. She and her brother both have this pale, lovely skin and Genna's a little more red headed than her brother. They look NOTHING like JJ and me. But we love them anyway. Walker is the most laid back little dude you'll ever meet. And the cutest. He loves sports. He actually knows how to score a touchdown on NCAA Football 2005 for PS2. He is truly his father's son ... and his uncle JJ's nephew. He adores his big sister, and like many little brothers do, wants to do everything she does. It will be fun to spend Christmas with them this year. And you know what? With the Coopers ... well, I'm kind of lucky to be getting in-lawed, aren't I?

Not your ordinary girl?

Well it's been nearly a week since I've been engaged ... betrothed ... affianced as it were. JJ was gone for most of it and I have to admit it was odd for me to field the questions that I got totally on my own for 3 days. For one, I'm not a big fan of being the center of questions anyway and for two ... this was really the type of story that would have been more fun to tell with him. Oh well. But the questions! It's as though once we got engaged we're supposed to know when the wedding's going to be and how we want it to happen and everything. Oy, people. Pretty much the only thing right now that is absolutely certain is that we want to get married at newhope and we want Benji to officiate the ceremony. Other than that, details are sketchy. Plus, I haven't the slightest clue about what I want the wedding to look like other than I plan to wear white (duh) and at some point there's going to be flowers and music. See? I told you the details are sketchy. I guess I should mention here that I didn't dream about a wedding from the time I was 5 or even from the time I started dating ... I didn't really consider the idea of a wedding until about .... July of this past summer. By then I knew JJ was the one and well, it seemed a little more reasonable to actually think about the possibility of one. But again, the details are sketchy. To the outside eye, some of the people who asked me questions seemed more excited than I am. I don't think that's true. I am very excited. But to be totally honest, the wedding itself doesn't excite me all THAT much. Yes it will be beautiful and enchanting and amazing (I hope) but it is not the prospect of the wedding that I find exciting, it's the prospect of marrying JJ that I find exciting. It's not the wedding day itself that I find thrilling, it's what comes after the wedding that thrills me to my very fingertips. What am I talking about? I'm taking about coming home from the office, and JJ's there. Or waking up in the morning and JJ's there. Or going to church every Sunday with JJ, not just meeting him there. It is the prospect of being with him everyday. So yes, I am excited. Just not for the wedding itself ... but for the marriage that comes after. Maybe that makes me weird. I think it might. But you know what? I'm okay with that. The wedding day, even though it's supposed to be a great day, is only a day. The rest of it lasts so much longer. **disclaimer: Expect some entries between now and the new year to be quite gush-y and cheese-y ... this is my outlet for excitement :-)**

From Sarah

When I was 14 I had no social life. I had very few friends but my friends weren't people I hung out with, they were people I saw occasionally when I was at school or rehearsal. I had a swim team but they definitely weren't my friends ... I raced them every day after school and I'm sure it drove them crazy. Well, Sarah Cox showed up and that summer and for the rest of high school we were best friends. Recently, Sarah and I have been at odds with each other. Especially over this whole JJ thing. And you have to understand that for Sarah, who's a 2nd year law student at UC-Davis, it had to be weird for me to be completely absorbed in a man she had never met, plus, she knew I was planning on marrying him and that didn't help the situation either. This morning, I got this email from Sarah: Last night when I was in bed, I was remembering how the morning we got our IB scores, we woke up too early because we'd miscalculated the time difference, and then you came over and we slept for an hour and then got them. It was such a random memory, but it made me smile. Must be the finals that's making me remember days of test scores gone by. I remember that day, too. The test scores, what we had worked towards for 4 years, were set to be released at 8 am that morning. Well, we made a mistake calculating the number of hours from Greenwich time to Central time and were an hour off; they actually weren't ready until 9. So we just crawled into Sarah's bed, set the alarm, and woke up to get our scores later. We both passed. We both got our IB diplomas. And that fall Sarah went to McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and I headed off to Washington University in St. Louis. Over years we've grown apart a little but we've done a good job staying in touch. When I marry JJ, Sarah's going to be in the wedding party. Maybe for the sake of some IB scores, or the sake of really bad Homecoming dances, or our senior prom, or maybe for the sake of old East High. In the end, with all of our (sometimes raging) differences, Sarah's been a pretty good friend. The sad thing is, our personalities clash so often now that I forget how great a friend she was, and how great a friend she really is sometimes. So maybe it's not for the sake of all that other stuff. Maybe it's just for the sake of old friends.

The Ring

Well ... my faithful readers want to know. I've had personal requests that this be posted. And really, thanks be to blogs. It saves me the trouble of having to tell the story a million times. Yesterday morning Curtis, our worship arts pastor, called me and asked me to arrive 20 or so minutes early for rehearsal last night as I'm playing on Sunday. When I get to the church at 6:40 it's lit, but there's no one there. I carry my violin to the front of the sanctuary and all of a sudden I hear All I Need by Sara Groves playing on the loud speakers. I turn around. JJ's standing in the balcony/tech booth. I call out, "What are you doing here?" He motions for me to come upstairs. I walk about 3 steps ... and then take off at a run. I meet him as he's coming down the stairs. He's got a box in his hand. He goes down on one knee. "Will you marry me, Angela Wong?" Before he gets the "Wong" all the way out, I've already told him yes and wrapped my arms around him. I'm crying. And miracle of all miracles, so is he. He takes me back upstairs to the tech booth ... which is where we became friends back in February - over the sound board ... and shows me how he set everything up. 1 Corinthians 13 is on the projection screens. The song is playing on the speakers. And there are tears running down both of our faces. And then he says, "Oh, and Curtis and Ed are already here. I made them go in the prayer chapel." So we go and let them out of confinement. Afterward we went to Moe's. Because that's what we do. We go to Moe's. We went back to his house for awhile afterward and when we got inside he got back down on his knees. I had no clue what he was doing. And he told me that I'm the one he's been looking for all of his life, that I make him happier than anyone he's ever known, and that he can't wait to marry me. We both did a good job fighting back tears at that juncture. JJ Cooper completes me. He lifts me up, he makes me smile, he can touch places in my heart I didn't know were there. He's my best friend. He's the best thing that ever happened to me. And best of all, God gave us into each other's keeping forever. He's on a plane all day today, headed out to Anaheim, CA for the baseball winter meetings. But on Monday he comes home to me. For the rest of our lives, he'll come home to me.

Dear Santa ...

OK OK I'm buying into commercial Christmas. It's awful. But ... Speedo Speed Socket goggles -- by far the coolest and most comfortable goggles I have seen in a long long time. Up until now I wasn't even aware they were for sale to the general public.

To the very tips of my fingers

Back in the Wichita Youth Orchestras days I could play for hours. Literally hours. We had orchestra class 5 days a week for 50 minutes at a time. I'd go home, practice if I had an audition or something coming up and then on Saturday mornings Youth Symphony & Co. would have rehearsal from 9-12 am. Yes, between the ages of 10-17 I gave up essentially every Saturday of the school year to rehearse. Don't ask me why. But sadly today I picked up my violin to practice for the service on Sunday and to go over some stuff for the HopeTown dinner Saturday night and ... I'm sore from playing. My poor fingers have grown soft in the last 4 years and they are telling me, "What is this rubbing up and down metal strings you keep having us do? We don't like it!" Alas I have to take a break. Gone are the days when I could play for 2-3 hours at a time.

12.08.2004

It's been a long time, I know. Almost a week, I think. But it's that time of year -- finals -- and as an academic I have been fully entrenched in the glory that is taking finals and for the first time, grading them as well. Just for the record I will mention that I have 20 students in my class of varying degrees of wonderfulness ... they really have made teaching fun. However, of these 20 students, I will be receiving 20 papers. These papers have no page limit. I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but since I'll be collecting these papers on Friday, the idea of no page limit has jumped from the abstract to the concrete and well, let's just say that JJ picked a great weekend to be out of town because I'm going to have PLENTY to do. Last weekend about 30 people went out on Friday night to celebrate the birthday of one Ms. Jamie Tharp. We went to Rio Churrascaria, a "Brazilian steakhouse" out in Raleigh. For people like JJ, this place was about as close to heaven as he was going to get while still on Earth. The idea is that you sit there, and these guys with cuts of meat on big long swords come by, they ask, "Would you like [insert name of cut of meat here]?" and you say "Yes, please." And they slice it right onto your plate. It was a new and interesting dining experience. Leave it to Dawn and Jamie to pull that one off. Sunday I ran CG. Nerve-wracking? Yes. Exciting? Yes. Totally fulfilling since it's been awhile since I've had to go, "OK God ... you're on ... can't do this without you"? Definitely. It was fun, though, and if you haven't already come check us out at newhope. Come on ... it's Christmas. Somewhat related, and out of chronological order, was the Christmas parade that newhope participated in on Saturday morning. I elected to stay in bed as I was exhausted but JJ went out and helped out with the float and all. At the end of the parade, when the float (aka flatbed hayrack type thing) had been traveling at a leisurely 2-3 mph they had to find a way to get the float from the endpoint of the parade back to the church. Benji, our crazy pastor, told everyone to sit down (there were about 40 people, about probably 1/3 of which were children between ages 3-8) and rather than taking the back roads, hopped on 15-501 pulling the flatbed behind him. Picture this if you will: 40 newhope members, including the worship pastor and his wife and children, the senior pastor's wife and children, and any number of spiritual leaders of the church going down 15-501 on the back of a flatbed being pulled by the senior pastor's pickup. "Hey, did your church split? It got small suddenly." "No, we didn't split. The pastor killed half the congregation pulling them down 15-501." I jest but only halfway. As JJ put it, I'd follow Benji spiritually almost anywhere. But when Benji starts using phrases like, "Oh, don't worry, we're heavily insured," run fast, run far. Because no good can come of it. Steelers 17, Jaguars 16. WAY WAY WAY too close for comfort. It has not been since the Steelers-Cowboys game back on Oct. 17 that I watched a game with such nervousness. It didn't help that it was a night game and so there I was, having been roused out of bed at a disgusting 6:15 am for WAM and it's past 11 pm and I can't fall asleep because the last game I didn't watch the whole time ... we lost to the Ravens. Unacceptable. So I was dragging my eyes open. But ... I'll say this: Ben Roethlisberger is definitely coming into his own. I know he didn't pass all that often but 14/17 for 221 yards is an alarming completion percentage. And not only that but he showed remarkable poise. My much awaited return of running back Duce Staley was sadly anti-climactic. I had been eager to see Duce pounding the ball up the field as he had earlier in the season, before he'd been injured and while he had a couple of decent runs, he was stopped by a very solid Jacksonville defense most of the time. Ditto that for the Bus. But a point that nfl.com and CBS Sportsline have both been making is that good football teams simply find a way to win. And that's what the Steelers have been doing - winning football games. This week they play the Jets and JJ will be in California but you can be darn sure that I'll be sitting on his couch watching that game. I'm the best thing that ever happened to the Steelers. I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
